A Fine Poem In Aberdeenshire Doric

 From

Ballater Resident Hugh Stewart

(Apologies to those living South of Carlisle or visiting the site from around the world who may have difficulty in understanding the Aberdeenshire doric)

The Truth Aboot The Booth

 Yon black an’ yalla shack

Jeest fower mile doon the track

We thocht it wis a wrack

But teamwork brocht it back.

It gaes back tae the days

Fan scouts rade BSAs

Wi’ a boxie on the side

Far a’ their graith wad bide.

Noo, complexity’s run amuck

An’ their gear stows oot a truck

That’s whey they hae fower wheels

Tae cairt roon’ a’ their teels.

Engine cc wis six hunder

Unless mah mind’s in blunder.

An’ the scouts, like gweed AAs,

A smert salute wad raise.

It went wi’ their khaki claes.

They wore breeches, aye, an’ beets

Laced ticht aroon’ their qweets.

Abune that, they hud gaiters

Like horsemen an’ siclike craiturs.

Since it micht rain, jeest whilies,

They’d a set o’ yalla ilies.

Noo, their wee bit yalla boxie,

Its pintwark lookit richt poxy,

Peelin richt doon tae the grain

An’ bleachit wi’ sun an’ rain.

It seemit sae melancholy

That it drew a tear frae Holley.

[Ah maun say, at this junction,

That the boxie hud nae function.

Its task wis lang complete:

It wis mair nor obsolete.]

Tae restore it micht seem folly,

Completely aff its trolley,

But no tae a man like Holley

He sware he wadnae stint

Till he’d refreshed its pint

Baith sides, in front an’ ahint.

He nott a talented crew

Tae rejuvenate Box 472.

The first man o’ that class

Wis the chiel cried Tony Bass.

Anither tae come forth

Wis namit as Derek N orth.

A third tae fill the void

Wis listed as Martin Holroyd.

In Holley’s ’oor  o’ need,

That wis sae far, sae gweed,

But ye cannae win them a’:

The standart hud tae fa’.

 Sae, wi’ Number Five

Quality took a dive.

Ah’ve nae desire tae shame him,

Sae Ah’m niver gyaun tae name  him.

They scrapit an’ they sandit

Till they were horny-handit.

They chauvit wi’ pintbrushes

Till they cam’ oot in hot flushes.

They strove singly an’ in pairs

Till the pint wis in sax layers.

In fact, nae decorator ivver

Hud boxit hauf sae clivver

Nae bonnier sicht ye’ll see

Alang the hale o’ the A93.

Ah think ye maun agree

They’re a credit tae the Dee.

They’re prood but they winnae boast.

It’s up tae me tae toast

[In wirds ye micht tak’ doon]:

‘May their cars nivver brak doon.’.

Yon black an’ yalla shack

Jeest fower mile doon the track,

We thocht it wis a wrack.

Here’s tae them fa brocht it back.
